Princess Anne’s curls seen in rare picture of her as child without sweptback beehive

Anne, Princess Royal has had the same hairstyle for around five decades.

Most of us are familiar with the swept up, bouffant style.

But a private photograph of Princess Anne and Prince Charles watching polo with their father at Smith’s Lawn, Windsor Great Park, shows that actually, the princess’s hair – when she was younger – was naturally blonde and very curly.

Anne, now 70, has spoken out about her hairstyle in the past, after actress Erin Doherty, who plays a young Anne in the Crown, gave several interviews in which she claimed it took between 90 minutes and two hours to get right.

Erin told journalists: “It’s its own beast.

“Literally, I would sit in the chair, people would come in and go and come in and go, and I sat still in the same place.

“But it was so necessary for her character because it felt like her hair and her fashion were the way that she was able to express herself in the confined, controlled environment that she grew up in.”

But in her typical no nonsense way Anne was having none of it.

In a programme titled Anne: The Princess Royal at 70, she said: “Actually I read an article the other day about this, I don’t watch Netflix and The Crown, but the actress was talking about how long it took them to do their hair like I did.

“And I’m thinking, ‘How could you possibly take that long?’ I mean, it takes me 10 or 15 minutes.”

The picture of a young Anne was posted as part of a short video reel on Prince Charles’ instagram page, Clarence House.

It appeared prior to the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral, with Charles paying tribute to his father for his service to the Queen, his family, and the country.

A caption alongside the video reel read: “My father, for I suppose the last 70 years, has given the most remarkable, devoted service to The Queen, to my family and to the country, but also to the whole of the Commonwealth… My dear Papa was a very special person.”

It was signed off by ‘The Prince of Wales.’

In the picture, Anne can be seen standing by her father, with Prince Charles on her left side.

Other images, taken with the rest of the family, including the Queen, also show Anne with heaps of blonde curls.

Yesterday, Anne paid tribute to her father, walking behind his coffin, alongside her brothers, as it made its way to St George’s Chapel in the grounds of Windsor Castle.

After his death, she shared a touching tribute to the Duke of Edinburgh, writing: “You know it’s going to happen but you are never really ready.

“My father has been my teacher, my supporter and my critic, but mostly it is his example of a life well lived and service freely given that I most wanted to emulate.”

She also praised his ability to treat everyone “as an individual in their own right” and said it was an honour and a privilege to have been asked to follow in his footsteps for much of her royal work.
