Great gran, 100, credits David Beckham calendar as her secret to staying young at heart

A great-great gran has revealed her secret to staying young at heart is smiling at England star David Beckham every morning on her calendar.

Rosena Garner turned 100 on April 4 at Brookside Care Home in Bamber Bridge, Lancs, receiving over 130 cards on her special day.

But her carers have lifted the lid on the secret to her long life and happiness – cheese, crackers and 45 year-old ex-Man United ace David Beckham.

Rosena wakes up every morning and smiles at her David Beckham calendar that she had pinned to the wall in front of her bed.

Jo Maxwell, Brookside’s activities coordinator, said: “Her secret to a long life is her love of cheese and crackers – and David Beckham.

Brookside’s Jo Maxwell explained how they made sure Rosena celebrated her century in style at the care home.

She added: “Despite lockdown restrictions, we wanted to make every effort to make Rosena’s birthday as special as we could.

“She was up dancing and we talked all about 1921, the year she was born. We talked about what was popular back in the day and reflected on the music.

“Her family sent us in a lovely resume of her life that I read out and we found out so much about her life that we didn’t know.

“We danced, listened to music and enjoyed a tea party. We asked people to send in cards on social media.

“We lost count of how many cards she got at 130, and she was lucky enough to get one from the Mayor of Chorley.”

Rosena, who was born in 1921 near Allonby in Cumbria, was a manager in the Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes.

The mother-of-three met her late husband Frank when she was working in the Navy during the second world war and married him in 1943.
