Covid cases rising in 109 areas – full list shows infection rates everywhere in England

Over a third of areas in England are still reporting rises in Covid infection rates as lockdown continues to slowly ease, figures show.

The new data, for the seven days to April 19, reveals 109 (35 per cent) areas have seen a rise in rates out of 315 places in the country.

A total of 190 (60 per cent) have seen a fall and 16 are unchanged.

Doncaster in Yorkshire continues to have the highest rate, with 214 new cases in the seven days to April 19 – the equivalent of 68.6 cases per 100,000 people.

This is down from 88.2 in the seven days to April 12.

Slough in Berkshire has the second highest rate, down from 71.6 to 63.5, with 95 new cases.

While Kirklees in West Yorkshire has the third highest, down from 77.3 to 60.0, with 264 new cases.

Earlier the Department of Health confirmed a slight rise in the R infection rate for England, now between 0.8 and 1, but said the pandemic is still shrinking.

This comes as more surge testing is to begin in another area of Birmingham after a confirmed case of the Covid-19 variant first identified in South Africa was discovered.

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) said the individual concerned had “self-isolated and their contacts have been identified”.

Households in the Highgate and Bordesley ward, which includes the city’s bustling Digbeth creative district, are to be targeted.

Surge testing had already been announced for households in the city’s nearby Alum Rock area, as well as Glebe Farm and Tile Cross, after a confirmed case of the variant earlier this week.

That had followed the introduction of surge testing in a different part of the city, after a single case of the same variant was uncovered there.
