What is a Canadian Study Permit?

A Canadian study permit is not a Canadian visa. Canadian Study Permit is a time-framed legal document issued by the Canadian Government to foreign or international students, it allows them to study at designated learning institutions in Canada. 

It is mandatory to apply for one before a foreign national will be allowed to study in Canada. You can apply port of entry into Canada or outside Canada depending on the option available to you. It is renewable before expiration, and holders have 90 days after its  expiration to leave Canada 

Study Permit Exemption

The following people can study in Canada without a study permit;

1. Short-Term Studies

Any course of study or program of six months or less than six months duration does not require a study permit, hence if you are an international student, if your course of study or program falls into this category, you don’t need a study permit. 

2. Minor Children in Canada

Minors in Canada do require a study permit to study in Canada if their parents fall into the below category

  • Refugee Claimant
  • The parents are in Canada to study or work.

3. Personnel of foreign Armed forces on International duty 

If you are military personnel on international duty in Canada, you do not require a study permit to study in Canada.

Requirement for Study Permit Application

  • Letter of Acceptance

One of the eligibility requirements is an acceptance letter from a designated institute of learning. This simply means to be eligible to apply for a study permit, one must have secured admission from any of the Designated institutes of learning in Canada. 

After securing admission, the institution will issue a proof of admission called a Letter of Acceptance.

  • Financial Proof or Evidence

The applicant will be required to tender financial proof such as bank statements or other financial documents, that he or his sponsor is financially capable of bankrolling his stay in Canada, and family members going with him. This is one of the major factors that will determine if he will be issued a study permit.     

Applicant must show proof that he or she has sufficient funds or the financial power to support himself or his spouse or family members going with him or her. 

  • Identity Proof

Applicant identity can be verified through a valid international passport, hence applicants are required to submit a valid international passport and two-sized passport photographs.

Fastest way to obtain a Study Permit as a foreigner

In accordance with the recent Visa Regulation, if you have a spouse or family member applying for a work permit or already working in Canada, your study permit application can be processed in two weeks 

Student Direct Stream

Application for a Canadian study permit usually takes 90 days to be processed, but it can be processed faster using the Student Direct Stream. With the student direct stream, study permit applications can be processed in 20 days, the application fee is $150 CAD. 

The limitation to the student direct stream is that not every foreign national is eligible to apply.

Eligibility Requirement for Student Direct Stream

  1. Applicant must be a legal resident living the below listed countries;
  • Senegal
  • Morocco

  • Vietnam
  • China
  • The Philippines
  • Pakistan
  • Peru
  • Costa Rica
  • Colombia
  • Brazil
  • Trinidad and Tobago
  • Antigua and Barbuda
  • Saint Vincent and Grenadines

Note; even if you are a citizen of the above-listed countries but not a resident of the country, you can not apply for the Student Direct Stream.

  1. Acceptance Letter from a designated Learning Institution
  2. Police Clearance or report
  3. Medical exam Result 
  4. Language proficiency test result, such as IELTS or TEF.
  5. Post-secondary transcript 
  6. Financial Proof, it may be in form of the following;
  • A receipt of payment of first year full tuition fee
  • A bank receipt indicating payment of tuition fee
  • An official letter from the designated learning institute indicating full payment of tuition fee.
  • Guarantee Investment Certificate. 

Can I bring my spouse or Children with me to Canada with T Student Direct Stream?

Yes, you can. Applicant spouse, common-law partner or dependents children, visitor visas, work permit, or study permit can get a faster application processing time if he or she completes their application the same time as his or hers, and also applicant should indicate that his or her family members are coming along with him or her when applying online.
